On a patrol cutting across the sun-baked edges of the Arizona frontier, a U.S. Cavalry unit escorts a prisoner, Wade Cooper, [Dale Robertson], when a savage ambush by the Coyotero initiates a brutal confrontation. The attack leaves the others dead and Cooper nearly slain, wandering the desolate wasteland until he is found near collapse by Nancy Mailer, [Martha Hyer], who brings him to the Trading Post run by her husband, Clint Mailer, [Wendell Corey]. There, a tense dynamic unfolds as Mailer instantly recognizes the man as someone hunted and marked, and he refuses to aid Cooper’s recovery until his wife convinces him that medical attention is a matter of life or death.

Meanwhile, Mailer has uncovered a rich vein of gold and becomes consumed by a single-minded resolve to protect his find, a fixation that feeds deep suspicion—about the gold and about the presence of Cooper at the Post. The mounting strain between the two men, and the quiet danger carried by Nancy, thickens the atmosphere around the small outpost as the trio’s uneasy proximity grows more volatile.

The situation spirals when a Coyotero raid traps them and abducts Mailer’s son, Tim, [Dandy Curran], holding him as a hostage with a grim demand: Mailer must deliver hundreds of rifles within seven days to fuel continued warfare against the white settlers. With the threat pressing in, Clint Mailer leaves to secure the weapons, and the pressure boils over at the Post. In the meantime, Cooper and Nancy find themselves drawn closer together, even as the truth about Tim’s parentage emerges and reveals that Tim is not Mailer’s son.

Mailer returns empty-handed and the clock ticks toward catastrophe. Cooper devises a bold, desperate plan that turns the tables: he steals the rifles from the army post, conceals them within the gold mine, and booby-traps the site to deter pursuit. As the Indians close in, the mine explodes in a carefully laid spectacle of danger and cunning. Tim is rescued, and Cooper and Nancy make their escape, choosing to begin a new life together with Tim, away from the shadows of gold, guns, and old grudges.
