Jim Garry Robert Mitchum is a weathered cowboy drifter who is summoned by his smooth-talking friend Tate Riling Robert Preston. He rides into a tense situation on a remote Indian reservation and quickly finds himself drawn into a brewing clash between a stubborn cattle owner and a cohort of hungry homesteaders, all while a calculated scheme quietly takes shape in the background. The cattle owner, John Lufton Tom Tully, has a rugged dignity and a guarded pride that makes him wary of outsiders, even as his family becomes entangled in the rising pressure over Lufton’s herd. Garry’s arrival stirs curiosity and suspicion in Lufton’s household, where Amy Lufton Barbara Bel Geddes cautiously tests Garry’s motives, and Carol Lufton Phyllis Thaxter, the other daughter, remains charmingly enigmatic and quietly drawn to the dangerous world Riling inhabits.

Pindalest condemns Lufton’s cattle as unfit to feed the Indians, and he orders the herd off the reservation within a week. Riling then mobilizes homesteaders into obstructing Lufton’s shakedown, skillfully convincing them that he is acting in their interests even as he eyes the cattle for a private bargain. The trap is delicate: Lufton would never sell to Riling, but he might to a stranger like Garry; in that case, Pindalest’s plan could be revived, and the government could be drawn into the purchase. Riling offers Garry a tidy sum—$10,000—for his role in the scheme, a temptation that tugs Garry deeper into a web of deceit and danger.

Lufton, stubborn and shrewd, manages to move his herd off the reservation, testing Garry’s credibility and loyalty as he does so. Amy, caught between trust and fear, begins to see Garry in a more favorable light, while Carol’s covert allegiance to Riling remains a volatile wild card. The Luftons’ relief is short-lived, because Carol, who loves Riling, tips him off and ensures that Riling remains one step ahead. The tension erupts as Riling and his men eventually locate the cattle and drive them back onto the reservation, a ruthless stampede that threatens to demolish Lufton’s efforts and ruin them all. In a brutal turn of fate, Kris Barden fires and stops the other would-be killer at the last moment, saving Garry’s life and delivering a pointed, terse warning to keep riding. The confrontation marks a turning point: Garry makes his way to Lufton’s ranch, where Amy finds him and, against the odds, begins to trust him—and to feel the stirrings of love. The two of them form a fragile bond as danger closes in from every side, and Lufton, wary but hopeful, allows Garry back into the circle, a move that slowly reshapes the dynamics of trust on the Lufton property.

To buy time and outmaneuver his opponents, Garry pretends to remain aligned with Pindalest while secretly breaking away from Riling’s influence. He tricks Pindalest into sending a messenger to the government to extend the deadline, all the while incapacitating Pindalest and taking him prisoner. Riling and his gang, furious at the turn of events, close in, tracking Garry and the others down. Garry is wounded—a stab to the chest—but he manages to escape to Kris Barden’s homestead, where Amy arrives to stand by him. The trio confronts the mounting danger as Riling, his two chief henchmen, and Pindalest descend upon them and a full gunfight erupts.

Garry urges Amy to leave for her safety, but she refuses to abandon him. With Kris and Amy’s help, Garry fights back, slipping out at night and staging a daring takedown of Pindalest while fending off the remaining gunmen. The clash leaves Riling fatally wounded, and he dies with Garry’s future and the Luftons’ fate hanging in the balance. By dawn, Lufton’s contingency plan comes to fruition: Lufton and his men arrive with a sense of justice and relief, Pindalest is taken into custody, and Amy declares that a new man will join the Lufton household. The mood shifts from peril to quiet celebration as Lufton proclaims it a reason to celebrate, and the reunited party heads for Barden’s jug, where the next chapter of their lives can begin together.
