Frankie Darro began his remarkable journey in the world of entertainment as a child of circus acrobats, born Frank Johnson, Jr. on 1917-12-22 in Chicago, Illinois. His parents, Frank Johnson Sr. and Ada, performed as "The Flying Johnsons" and toured with the Sells Floto Circus, where young Frankie learned to conquer heights on a tightrope, a skill that later defined his on‑screen daring. By the age of six he had already entered the silent‑film arena, quickly gaining notice for his natural talent and fearless stunts, earning praise as “one of the cleverest child actors on the screen.” Throughout the 1920s and 1930s he flourished in adventure serials, westerns, and dramatic features, securing memorable roles such as Eddie Smith in Wild Boys of the Road and the mischievous Lampwick in Disney’s Pinocchio (1940), the latter cementing his place in cinematic history.
His versatile career spanned over five decades, from child star to teen idol and later to seasoned character actor and stuntman. Working for studios like Warner Bros., Mascot Pictures, and Monogram, Darro earned increasing salaries—reaching $5,000 a week for Burn ’Em Up Barnes—and headlined his own series alongside sidekick Mantan Moreland. World War II saw him serve in the US Navy Hospital Corps, where malaria would later plague his health. Post‑war, he returned to Monogram’s “Teen Agers” comedies and the Bowery Boys, before transitioning mainly to stunt work, doubling for actors such as Leo Gorcey. His later years were marked by battles with illness and alcoholism, leading him to open a modest tavern on Santa Monica Boulevard, humorously named “Try Later.” Despite these hardships, Darro continued to appear in television classics—The Red Skelton Show, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and Batman—and voiced iconic parts like Robby the Robot in Forbidden Planet (1956).
