Bing Crosby stars as Dan Brooks, a Yale graduate who is expected to marry Margaret Higgins, played by Frances Gifford, and join the Higgins family’s box-making business. Dan’s true passion is his horse, Broadway Bill, and he dreams of proving himself in racing rather than following the family path.
To raise the entry fee for the Imperial Derby, Dan teams up with his old pal Professor Pettigrew [Raymond Walburn], whose schemes are equal parts comic and desperate. Their plans backfire in a bakery of mishaps, and a moment of sheer embarrassment lands them in a restaurant they can’t pay for, forcing them to sing the Yale school song to settle the bill.
Alice ‘Princess’ Higgins, [Colleen Gray], the younger sister, is secretly in love with Dan and tries to help by pawning her belongings. Whitey, Dan’s loyal groom, [Clarence Muse], gets beaten in a craps game while trying to scrape together money, and Broadway Bill is carted away because Dan can’t pay the feed bill, landing him in jail.
A rich man places a 100-to-1 bet on Bill, which sparks rumors that the horse is a sure winner. The odds swing as gamblers and a crooked jockey push their own favorites toward victory, creating a tense atmosphere around the race. Broadway Bill somehow manages to win, but he collapses at the finish line and suffers a fatal heart attack.
Dan mourns, then finds a path forward by deciding to buy and race Broadway Bill II. His renewed enthusiasm persuades Alice and her father to back him, giving him a second chance to chase his dream and redefine his future.
