Lynn Palmer Kay Francis is a compassionate Travelers Aid volunteer in San Francisco who goes out of her way to help immigrants, travelers, the unemployed, and the homeless. She runs a station that connects people with support and guidance, and her work begins to shape the lives of those around her. When Mack Hale George Brent arrives seeking information about a worker to hire for the ambitious Golden Gate Bridge project (a bridge that would not be completed until 1937), the two are drawn together despite their different personalities and outlooks.

Mack is initially skeptical of Lynn’s insistence on helping others, while Lynn is drawn to Mack’s practicality and determination. Lynn’s roommate Velma Tuthill Patricia Ellis is the daughter of one of the bridge’s backers and is also attracted to Mack, which adds a layer of tension but also mutual interest.

As their relationship develops, Mack faces pressure from a protection racket led by Sharkey Barton MacLane, who bribes and manipulates workers to create dangerous conditions that lead to the perception that Mack is responsible for a worker’s death. Despite his proposal of marriage, Lynn refuses to quit her charitable work, standing by the vulnerable and challenging the schemes that threaten laborers and their safety.

At a pivotal workers’ meeting, Lynn helps expose Sharkey’s plot and clear Mack’s name before the men, turning them against Sharkey. This vindicates Mack and forces him to confront his own previous judgments about people less fortunate than himself. In a hopeful finale, the two reconcile, each recommitting to the causes they care about—the bridge project for Mack and social support for Lynn—recognizing that their shared values can coexist and complement each other.
