She convinces Brad, a bit hesitant at first, and Frank M. Thomas’s character, Mike North, the trainer of the horse, to investigate further. The mystery deepens when Brad notices peculiar traces of gelatin on the horse’s dead body, raising suspicions that something more sinister is involved.

Soon afterward, Brad receives an envelope at his residence addressed to Mike North. Curiously, North calls him shortly after, saying he sent the envelope and plans to pick it up. However, a mysterious voice claiming to be North later instructs Brad to meet him elsewhere but without the money—an odd and suspicious request. Brad, feeling increasingly cautious, opens the envelope himself and finds a substantial sum of money inside. To throw suspicion off, he replaces the money with torn pieces from a magazine. His suspicions are confirmed when a thief breaks into his suite, searching for the envelope. When a confrontation ensues between Brad and the burglar, Paula unexpectedly steps in to help, grabbing a skull in her attempt to assist—and in the process, she inadvertently knocks Brad out, allowing the intruder to escape.

The chaos escalates when the doorbell rings again. When Brad opens the door, he is horrified to find Mike North’s dead body falling into his lap. Now, the police are involved, and James Gleason plays Inspector Corrigan, who quickly names Brad as the prime suspect in North’s murder. With his reputation at stake, Brad is driven to uncover the truth behind the series of murders to clear his name.

As the investigation unfolds, a list of potential suspects emerges, each with possible motives. These include Ralph Morgan playing Leroy Hutchins, the owner of the winning horse; Grant Mitchell as John Summers, the lucrative horse-race proprietor; Mrs. Summers, who is secretly involved with Nick Martel (a bookie indebted to North for a large sum) played by Robert Armstrong. Even Brad’s own receptionist, Lila Lee as Miss Prentiss, is caught in the web of suspicion, seen in close contact with Martel.

Throughout his inquiries, Brad learns that North did not place the betting himself but had the wager made by someone else. The person who took the bet was instructed to send the money to a specific address, which led Brad and Paula to the scene of the crime: where Lou Pender, portrayed by Paul Fix, who was masquerading as North, has been murdered in a hidden bed after killing a spider. As Brad examines the scene, a shot rings out from a nearby window, though he is not seriously harmed—a clear sign that someone is trying to intimidate him.

The plot thickens as Brad deduces that all the murders are linked by a deadly method involving black widow spiders encapsulated in gelatin capsules. The killer would attach such a capsule to the victim—whether a corpse or a live person—and wait for the heat of the body to melt the gelatin, releasing the deadly spider. With police holding the $125,000 bet money, Brad fears the murderer might attempt the same act again.

Anticipating another attack, Brad sets up film cameras around the racetrack, knowing the same two horses will race again. On race day, despite precautions like inoculating the jockeys, the murderer attempts to strike once more. But thanks to Brad’s foresight, the killer’s plan is caught on film. The footage reveals Grant Mitchell’s character, Mr. Summers, sneaking a capsule down the jockey’s back, confirming what Brad suspected all along.

Confronted with the evidence, Mr. Summers admits his motive was revenge against his unfaithful wife and Nick Martel, whom he believed had betrayed him. Just as he pulls out a gun to escalate the situation, Brad intervenes and subdues him. In the ensuing struggle, Paula, trying to assist, accidentally knocks Brad out with a vase. Despite the chaos, love triumphs, and the couple happily remarry, reuniting after this harrowing adventure filled with deception, danger, and intrigue.
