Motion capture (mocap) uses sensors—optical markers, inertial units or depth cameras—to track body movements in three dimensions. Captured data drives digital character rigs, preserving realistic motion for creatures, robots and crowds.

History and Evolution

Early experiments in the 1970s used magnetic sensors; by the 1990s, optical systems with reflective markers and multiple cameras became standard. Advances in computer vision and markerless solutions now allow more flexible and on‑set capture.
