Motion Blur Pass

A motion blur pass is a separately rendered layer in CGI that contains only the motion blur information for an object, used for greater control in compositing.


Isolating the Blur for Compositing

In computer-generated imagery (CGI), a ‘render pass’ is the process of rendering a specific attribute of a 3D scene as a separate image layer. A motion blur pass is a specific type of AOV (Arbitrary Output Variable) that isolates the motion blur of a CGI element from its main color and texture information. Instead of rendering the final CGI object with motion blur ‘baked in,’ the artist renders a ‘beauty pass’ (the clean, sharp object) and a separate motion blur pass. This second pass is typically a grayscale image that contains ‘motion vectors,’ which are data representing the direction and speed of every pixel’s movement between frames.

The Compositor’s Advantage

This workflow provides a visual effects compositor with a significant amount of flexibility when integrating the CGI element into a live-action shot:

  • Fine-Tuned Matching: The compositor can use the motion vector pass to apply and adjust the amount of motion blur procedurally. This allows them to precisely match the CGI’s motion blur to the motion blur captured in the live-action camera footage, which is essential for a seamless and believable integration.
  • Reduced Render Times: Re-rendering a full, complex CGI object with 3D motion blur is extremely time-consuming. If a change is needed only to the motion blur, the compositor can simply adjust the effect using the already-rendered motion blur pass, saving hours or even days of render time.
  • Creative Control: It gives the artist creative control to exaggerate or reduce motion blur for stylistic effect, a task that is difficult and destructive if the blur is baked into the main render.
