RED IPP2

RED IPP2 (Image Processing Pipeline 2) is a complete color management workflow designed by RED Digital Cinema to process the RAW sensor data from its cameras into standardized, color-accurate images.


A Holistic Approach to RED Color

RED IPP2 is not just a single setting or a LUT, but a complete, end-to-end Image Processing Pipeline. It is a holistic color management system that governs how the RAW sensor data (stored in an R3D file) from a RED camera is transformed into a final, viewable image. Introduced as a successor to RED’s original color science, IPP2 was designed from the ground up to offer improved color accuracy, more pleasing skin tones, smoother highlight roll-off, and a more streamlined and standardized workflow for post-production.

The Core Components of IPP2

The IPP2 pipeline consists of several distinct stages that work together to create the final image:

  1. Primary RAW Development: This is the initial processing of the R3D file. It includes de-mosaicing the sensor data and applying basic settings like ISO, exposure, and white balance chosen by the cinematographer on set. This stage is non-destructive, and all settings can be changed later in post-production.
  2. Color Space: REDWideGamutRGB (RWG): After the initial development, the image data is placed into a new, extremely large color space called REDWideGamutRGB. This color space is significantly larger than traditional standards like Rec.709 or DCI-P3. Its purpose is to be a ‘container’ big enough to hold every single color the camera sensor can possibly capture, ensuring no color information is clipped or lost during processing.
  3. Gamma Curve: Log3G10: Simultaneously, the image’s tonal information is mapped using a new logarithmic curve called Log3G10. This log curve is designed to efficiently encode the wide dynamic range of RED’s sensors into a 10-bit file, providing a dense and flexible starting point for color grading.
  4. Output Transform: This is the final, crucial step. The image, now in the wide-gamut/log format (RWG/Log3G10), is not meant to be viewed directly. The Output Transform is a scientifically accurate LUT that maps this data to a specific, standardized viewing space. IPP2 offers a range of output transforms for different delivery standards:
    • Rec.709: For standard HDTV broadcast and web video.
    • DCI-P3: For digital cinema projection.
    • Rec.2020: For UHD and HDR content.

The Workflow Advantage

The beauty of the IPP2 system is that it separates the creative grade from the technical display transform. A colorist does all their work on the rich RWG/Log3G10 data. The Output Transform is the very last step in the chain. This means the same creative grade can be used to generate multiple deliverables. You can render a Rec.709 version for the web, then simply swap the Output Transform to DCI-P3 to render the version for the movie theater, all while being confident that the color will be consistent and accurate across all formats.
