RED Komodo

A compact Super 35 camera with 6K global shutter for versatile production

RED Komodo

Overview

The RED Komodo, released in 2020, is RED Digital Cinema’s compact Super 35 camera offering 6K resolution in a small form factor. Weighing under 2 pounds, it features a global shutter sensor that eliminates rolling shutter artifacts and supports 6K full‑width recording at 40 fps.

Sensor and Recording

Equipped with a Super 35 19.9 MP sensor, the Komodo captures REDCODE RAW and ProRes formats to CFast 2.0 media. Its global shutter design provides accurate rendering of fast motion, making it suitable for action sequences and drone workflows.

Design and Connectivity

The Komodo’s RF lens mount supports a wide range of modern lenses and includes integrated NDI output for live streaming and remote production workflows. Dual native ISO settings at 800 and 4000 enable low‑light performance with minimal noise.

Applications

Ideal for gimbals, drones, and handheld rigs, the Komodo has been used in commercials, indie features, and extensive VFX plate work. Its size and image quality bridge the gap between mirrorless cameras and high‑end cinema bodies.

Trivia

  • The Komodo was the first RED camera to feature a global shutter in its sensor.
  • It supports 6K anamorphic recording, allowing for cinematic widescreen productions.
