The High-Resolution Assembly

The online cut is the second and final phase of the film editing process, following the creative offline cut. Where the offline cut is about making storytelling decisions with low-resolution proxies, the online cut is the technical process of taking those decisions and applying them to the original, full-quality source footage. This process is also known as conforming.

The online editor is a specialist technician who takes the final, locked edit from the creative editor and meticulously re-builds it from scratch, shot for shot, using the pristine, high-resolution camera negative files. This is guided by an Edit Decision List (EDL), a frame-accurate recipe generated from the offline edit that contains the timecode for every single cut.

The Gateway to Finishing

The purpose of the online cut is to create a flawless, full-resolution version of the film that is ready for the final stages of post-production, collectively known as “finishing.” Once the online conform is complete, this master version of the film is handed over to other departments:

• To the Colorist: For final color grading.
• To the Visual Effects (VFX) Team: To drop in the final, completed VFX shots.
• To the Sound Mixers: To marry the final sound mix to the picture.

In the past, the distinction between offline and online was vast due to the limitations of computer hardware. An offline edit could be done on a desktop computer, while an online edit required a powerful and expensive suite of machines. While modern computers have blurred these lines, the offline/online workflow remains the industry standard for major productions. It separates the creative process (the offline) from the technical process (the online), allowing each to be performed with maximum efficiency.
