The Immersive Audio Bitstream (IAB) is a digital packaging format developed to carry object‑based and channel‑based audio together in one interoperable stream. Unlike traditional channel‑based mixes, which fix sounds to specific speaker positions, IAB encapsulates discrete audio objects—each with metadata describing position, movement, and rendering priority—alongside legacy channel feeds. This dual approach ensures compatibility with existing playback systems while enabling more advanced immersive experiences on capable hardware.

Historically, IAB emerged through collaboration between industry bodies and Dolby Laboratories in the mid‑2010s to address the growing demand for immersive sound in cinema and broadcast. It leverages MPEG‑H Audio’s object coding for efficient compression and synchronization, allowing a single file to adapt to diverse playback layouts from stereo up to 22.2.
