Delta-E

Delta E is a standard color science metric that calculates the perceived difference between two colors, serving as a critical tool for ensuring color accuracy in filmmaking.


Quantifying Perceptual Color Difference

While a color can be defined by a set of numbers (like its RGB or CIE Lab* values), these numbers don’t intuitively tell us how different two colors look to a human. Delta E (often written as dE or ΔE*, where Delta is the Greek letter for ‘change’) is a metric designed to solve this problem. It calculates a single number that represents the ‘distance’ between two colors in a perceptually uniform color space. The goal is to create a value where the number corresponds directly to how different a person would perceive the colors to be.

The Delta E Scale

Over the years, the formula for calculating Delta E has been refined (e.g., CIE76, CIE94, CIEDE2000), but the general interpretation of the resulting value remains consistent. A simple guide is as follows:

  • ΔE < 1.0: The difference is not perceptible to the human eye. This is the target for professional reference equipment.
  • ΔE 1.0 - 2.0: The difference is perceptible only through very close observation by a trained eye.
  • ΔE 2.0 - 10.0: The difference is perceptible at a glance.
  • ΔE 10.0 - 50.0: The colors are perceived as significantly different.

Critical Applications in Filmmaking

In the highly controlled world of digital filmmaking, Delta E is a fundamental metric for maintaining quality control and consistency.

  1. Monitor and Projector Calibration: The most critical application is in the calibration of professional reference displays used for color grading. A colorist’s monitor must be a perfect, neutral canvas. These displays are calibrated using a spectroradiometer to ensure that when the software sends a specific color value, the color displayed on screen is an exact match. The calibration report will show the average ΔE value across a patch set of colors, which must be below 1.0 for professional work.
  2. Visual Effects (VFX): When compositing CGI elements into a live-action plate, color accuracy is paramount. If a company’s logo must be a specific ‘brand blue,’ VFX artists can use Delta E to mathematically verify that the color of the rendered element on screen is a precise match to the brand’s color specification.
  3. Camera Matching: On multi-camera shoots (common in television and large-scale features), cinematographers shoot color charts at the beginning of each day. In post-production, a colorist can analyze the charts from each camera and use software to measure the Delta E difference between them, allowing for precise matching so that cuts between cameras are seamless.
