Roe Black Pearl

Roe Black Pearl is a line of high-performance LED video panels that are the industry standard for building the curved walls used in virtual production.

The Canvas for Virtual Production

Not all LED panels are created equal. The screens used for a concert or a billboard are not suitable for the precise demands of in-camera visual effects (ICVFX). ROE Visual is a market-leading manufacturer of LED panels, and their Black Pearl series (specifically the BP2 and BP2V2 models) became the benchmark for virtual production after being used to build the revolutionary LED Volume for Disney’s The Mandalorian.

Designed for the Camera’s Eye

Roe Black Pearl panels are engineered with specific properties that make them ideal for being filmed by a sensitive, high-resolution cinema camera:

  • High Refresh Rate: They have a refresh rate of 3840Hz or higher, which is critical for preventing flicker and other temporal artifacts when shooting at various frame rates and shutter angles.
  • Wide Color Gamut & Accuracy: They can reproduce a vast range of colors with exceptional fidelity, allowing them to display photorealistic digital environments that seamlessly blend with physical sets and actors.
  • Minimized Moiré and Scan Lines: The physical design of the pixels and the surface of the panels are optimized to reduce moiré—the distracting, wavy pattern that can appear when a camera films a fine-grid pattern. This is a common problem with lower-quality screens.
  • Wide Viewing Angle: The panels maintain consistent color and brightness even when viewed from extreme angles, which is essential for a curved LED wall that the camera will be moving around within.
  • Anti-Reflection Surface: They feature a matte, non-reflective surface that minimizes glare and unwanted reflections from the practical lights on set.

The combination of Roe Black Pearl LED panels (the canvas) and Brompton Tessera processors (the brains) forms the technological foundation for the majority of high-end virtual production stages around the world, enabling the creation of seamless and immersive in-camera visual effects.
