The Final Take Gamble

“Dollar Hat” is a classic piece of film set jargon that refers to what the crew hopes, or bets, will be the final take of a particular setup or the last shot of the day. It manifests as a lighthearted, informal wager, usually initiated by a member of the grip or electric department. The tradition signifies that the day’s work is drawing to a close and serves as a humorous piece of communication between the crew and the director.

The Tradition in Practice

The ritual typically involves a crew member taking out a dollar bill and placing it on the camera’s matte box—the shade attached to the front of the lens—effectively creating a “hat” for the camera. This action, or sometimes just the verbal announcement of “Dollar hat!”, signals the bet: that the current take will be the one the director approves (or “buys”). If the director says “Cut, print, moving on!”, the person who made the bet wins the satisfaction of being right (the dollar is usually just symbolic). However, if the director calls for another take (“Going again!”), the crew member loses their dollar, often to the delight of the rest of the crew.

More Than Just a Bet

The Dollar Hat is a small but significant part of on-set culture. It functions as:

• A Morale Booster: It’s a fun, simple way to build camaraderie and acknowledge that the end of a long, arduous workday is in sight.
• Subtle Communication: While never meant to be disrespectful, it can act as a gentle, humorous signal to the director and assistant director that the crew is feeling the pressure of time and is ready to wrap.
• A Companion to Other Slang: It exists alongside other “end of day” terms. The actual final shot is often called the “Martini Shot” (because the next shot is in a glass). A close-to-last shot might be called the “Window Shot” because everyone is metaphorically looking out the window, ready to go home. The Dollar Hat is the bet that the Martini Shot is finally here.
