Parallax Error

In virtual production, a parallax error is a visual glitch where the 3D background on an LED wall does not move correctly in relation to the camera's perspective.


Breaking the Illusion of Depth

Parallax is the visual effect that creates our sense of depth, where objects closer to us appear to move more quickly than objects further away as we move our head. In-Camera VFX (ICVFX) on an LED Volume relies on perfectly recreating this effect. The camera tracking system tells the game engine where the real camera is, and the engine renders the 3D background from that exact perspective, creating a perfect illusion of depth.

A parallax error occurs when this system fails, even for a fraction of a second. It is a visual artifact where the background on the 2D screen ‘slips’ or ‘swims’ against the foreground elements, breaking the illusion that they exist in the same three-dimensional space. The audience can suddenly perceive the background as a flat screen rather than a real environment.

Causes of Parallax Error

These errors are the primary technical challenge that virtual production teams work to eliminate. They are typically caused by issues in the camera tracking pipeline:

  • Latency: A delay between the physical camera’s movement and the corresponding update of the image on the screen. Even a few milliseconds of latency can be perceptible.
  • Tracking Inaccuracy: If the tracking system briefly loses its position or provides an incorrect coordinate, the virtual camera will jump to the wrong spot, causing a jarring slip.
  • Lens Distortion: If the precise distortion characteristics of the physical camera lens have not been perfectly calibrated and mapped in the virtual system, the edges of the frame may appear to bend or warp incorrectly as the camera moves.
