A 2K scan is the process of converting the analog images captured on a physical film strip (like 35mm or 16mm) into digital files. This is the crucial first step in any modern post-production workflow for a film shot on celluloid. The resulting digital files can then be used for editing, color grading, and adding visual effects.
Defining the ‘2K’ Standard
The term ‘2K’ refers to the horizontal resolution of the scanned image. The specific dimensions are:
- Horizontal Resolution: 2048 pixels (often abbreviated as ‘2K’).
- Vertical Resolution: This varies depending on the aspect ratio of the film being scanned. For a standard 1.85:1 widescreen film, a 2K scan would be 2048 x 1107 pixels.
For many years, 2K was the industry standard for the Digital Intermediate (DI) process. The workflow involved scanning the original camera negative at 2K, performing all post-production digitally at this resolution, and then either creating a 2K Digital Cinema Package (DCP) for digital theaters or recording the final image back onto film for traditional release prints.
The Modern Context: 2K vs. 4K
While 4K (4096 pixels horizontal) has now become the preferred standard for high-end feature film scanning and mastering, particularly for 4K UHD and HDR releases, 2K scanning remains highly relevant and widely used.
- Cost-Effectiveness: 2K scanning is faster and generates smaller file sizes, making it a more budget-friendly option.
- Sufficiency for Certain Formats: A high-quality 2K scan provides more than enough resolution for an excellent HD (1920x1080) master for broadcast or standard streaming.
- VFX Workflows: It is still common for many visual effects shots to be completed at 2K resolution before being upscaled and integrated into a final 4K master.
A 2K scan of a 35mm negative is still a high-quality, professional standard that captures a great deal of the information present on the original film.
