A 22.2 mix is the ultra-immersive, 24-channel surround sound format developed by NHK for Japan's 8K 'Super Hi-Vision' broadcast standard.

As Japan’s public broadcaster NHK developed the stunning visual resolution of 8K television (branded ‘Super Hi-Vision’), their sound engineers were tasked with creating an audio experience that was equally immersive. The result is 22.2 multichannel audio, an ambitious and complex sound format designed to create a perfect, three-dimensional sphere of sound that completely envelops the listener.


The 24-Speaker Configuration

The name ‘22.2’ refers to the 22 discrete, full-range channels and 2 dedicated Low-Frequency Effects (LFE, or subwoofer) channels. The 22 main speakers are meticulously arranged in three distinct height layers to provide unparalleled spatial accuracy:

  • Upper Layer: Nine speakers positioned high above the listener.
  • Middle Layer: Ten speakers arranged on the standard ear-level horizontal plane.
  • Lower Layer: Three speakers positioned below the ear-level plane.

This incredibly dense, channel-based layout allows for extremely precise sound placement, capable of recreating the acoustic environment of a location—such as a concert hall or a sports stadium—with breathtaking realism.


Application and Niche

The 22.2 format is not intended for commercial cinema, which has largely standardized on object-based systems like Dolby Atmos. Instead, its primary application is for 8K broadcasting in Japan. It is used for premium live event coverage, such as the Olympic Games, classical music concerts, and other major cultural events, where the goal is to provide the home viewer with an experience that is as close as possible to being physically present at the venue. It represents a pinnacle of channel-based audio engineering, designed for a very specific, high-fidelity application.
