Silk

A translucent fabric material used to diffuse and soften light on set.

Purpose

Silks spread and scatter light, reducing harsh shadows and producing a more flattering, even illumination. They are especially valued for lighting actors in close-ups.

Types

  • White Silk — Softens light without significant color shift.
  • Artificial Silk — Durable synthetic versions for outdoor use.

Applications

  • Overhead rigs to soften sunlight in exterior scenes.
  • On frames in front of studio lights to create a gentle wraparound effect.

Creative Uses

Silks help cinematographers achieve a natural look, especially in daylight scenes, by transforming hard sun into soft, cinematic lighting.

Considerations

Silks can reduce light intensity significantly, so adjustments to exposure or additional lighting may be needed.
