ProRes is a suite of lossy video codecs developed by Apple Inc., designed to offer high image fidelity alongside low computational overhead for professional editing workflows. By employing intraframe compression and maintaining precise color sampling, ProRes enables frame-accurate editing, color grading and effects compositing without taxing storage or CPU resources.
Introduced in 2007 with Final Cut Studio, ProRes addressed the need for a high-quality, industry-standard codec that could handle multi-stream HD and beyond. Early profiles—ProRes 422 (10-bit), ProRes 422 HQ (higher bitrate)—were later joined by variants supporting proxy editing (ProRes 422 Proxy), lower data rates (ProRes 422 LT) and high-resolution formats (ProRes 4444 and 4444 XQ with alpha channel support).
