A successor to H.264 offering improved compression for high-resolution video.
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), also known as H.265 or MPEG-H Part 2, is a video compression standard designed to double the data compression ratio of H.264 at the same quality level. It enables efficient encoding of UHD (4K) and future 8K content, making it well-suited for next-generation broadcast, streaming and storage.
Jointly developed by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group and MPEG, HEVC was finalized in 2013. It introduced significant enhancements—including larger coding tree units, improved motion compensation and advanced entropy coding—to achieve substantial bitrate savings over its predecessor.
Key innovations in HEVC include:
Profiles such as Main, Main 10 (10-bit color) and Main Still Picture cater to different application needs.
HEVC is the codec of choice for many UHD streaming services (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video), 4K Blu-ray Discs and broadcast standards (DVB-UHDTV Phase 1). Mobile device support—both hardware and software—is widespread, facilitating efficient 4K recording and playback on smartphones and tablets.
While HEVC’s technical merits are clear, its adoption has been hindered by complex and fragmented patent licensing via multiple patent pools. This has spurred the development of royalty-free alternatives such as AV1. Despite this, HEVC remains a key technology in high-quality video delivery infrastructures, and ongoing enhancements—such as VVC (Versatile Video Coding)—build upon its foundation to address future bandwidth and quality demands.
