Fish-eye lenses abandon rectilinear projection—where straight lines remain straight—in favor of equidistant or equisolid-angle projection. These projection formulas map a scene’s spherical coordinates onto a flat sensor, causing straight lines not passing through the center to appear curved. They are used to emphasize depth, create comedic exaggeration, or depict an otherworldly environment. Music videos frequently utilize fish-eye shots to convey frenetic energy or highlight choreographed routines. Underwater cinematography benefits from fish-eye lenses, capturing divers, marine life, and oceanic landscapes in a single frame. Directors sometimes combine fish-eye shots with rapid editing to create a visual montage that shocks or surprises audiences.
Modern fish-eye lenses often include digital de-fishing algorithms to correct extreme curvature for more natural rendering. Anamorphic fish-eye adapters attach to existing lenses, adding curvature while preserving higher resolutions. Mirror (catadioptric) fish-eye lenses use a curved mirror inside the lens to achieve ultra-wide views in a more compact form factor.
