Mo-cap Volume

A mo-cap volume is a specially equipped performance space surrounded by tracking cameras, designed to capture the three-dimensional movement of actors and objects.


The Digital Stage

A motion capture (mo-cap) volume is the physical space where the art of performance capture takes place. It is a dedicated stage, ranging in size from a small room to a massive soundstage, that is outfitted with a grid of highly specialized, high-speed cameras. These cameras create an overlapping field of view that covers the entire ‘volume’ of the performance area. The sole purpose of this setup is to accurately record the motion of performers and props within the space, translating their real-world movements into digital data that can be used to animate 3D characters.

The Capture Process

The most common technique used in a mo-cap volume is optical motion capture. The process involves:

  1. The Suit and Markers: A performer wears a tight-fitting suit onto which dozens of small, reflective markers are placed at key anatomical locations, such as the joints (wrists, elbows, knees), head, and hands.
  2. The Camera System: The specialized cameras surrounding the volume emit infrared light. This light reflects off the markers on the suit.
  3. Data Triangulation: Each camera records the 2D position of every marker it can see. By combining the data from multiple cameras, the mo-cap software can triangulate the precise 3D position of each marker in space, hundreds of times per second.
  4. Creating the Digital Skeleton: This cloud of moving marker data is then reconstructed into a digital ‘skeleton.’ This is a 3D representation of the performer’s movements, independent of their physical appearance.

This final skeleton data is then ‘retargeted’ by animators and applied to a 3D character model. This allows the nuanced, subtle performance of a human actor to drive the animation of any conceivable creature, from a talking ape to a ten-foot-tall blue alien.

The mo-cap volume is the technological heart of performance capture, a technique that has revolutionized visual effects. It has allowed for the creation of some of cinema’s most iconic digital characters, whose emotional depth is a direct result of the human actor’s performance on the mo-cap stage. Andy Serkis’s portrayals of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings and Caesar in the Planet of the Apes series, as well as the performances of the cast in James Cameron’s Avatar, are landmark examples of the artistry made possible by the technology of the mo-cap volume.
