Raymond Thomas Bailey was born on May 6, 1904 in San Francisco, California, the son of William and Alice Bailey. From a young age he dreamed of stardom and fled to Hollywood as a teenager, only to discover that the silent‑picture era offered little more than menial labor, culminating in his dismissal after sneaking onto a mob set. After brief stints as a day‑labourer, stockbroker, and banker, he abandoned the West Coast and drifted to New York, where he again struggled to secure theatrical work. A turning point arrived when he signed on as a merchant seaman, sailing to China, Japan, the Philippines and the Mediterranean; while docked in Hawaii he tended a pineapple plantation, performed in community theatre and sang on the radio, experiences that honed his stagecraft. He returned to Hollywood in 1938 and finally broke through with bit parts, notably as Mr. West in The Green Hornet serial. World War II saw him reenlist in the United States Merchant Marine, after which he emerged as a reliable character actor on both the big screen and the burgeoning television medium. Bailey appeared in dozens of classic series, from Alfred Hitchcock Presents to The Twilight Zone, and earned Broadway credits in The Caine Mutiny Court‑Martial and The Bat. His most iconic performance was as the miserly banker Milburn Drysdale on The Beverly Hillbillies, a role that defined his legacy and cemented his place in American pop culture. In the early 1970s he began showing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, which limited his appearances to two Disney films before his retirement in 1975. He spent his final years split between a Laguna Niguel condo and a houseboat, maintaining a friendship with co‑star Nancy Kulp. Raymond Bailey died of a heart attack on April 15, 1980 in Irvine, California; his ashes were scattered at sea, concluding a remarkable career that spanned nearly four decades.
