In 1948, John Bolan, a 30-year-old seasoned pilot for Federal Airways, is approaching a landing at a busy New York airport. As he and his 28 passengers glide toward the runway, he is unsettled by vivid visions of a sky battle from World War I, over France, thirty years earlier. The scenes plunge him into the thick of a dogfight, where the memory of fast-moving aircraft and the sting of machine-gun fire surge through him. Bolan’s reflexes misfire as he plunges into a rapid dive, losing track of the present moment and endangering everyone aboard. His co-pilot, Russell Smith, is forced to act quickly, delivering a knockout blow to take control of the cockpit and steer the plane to a safe landing.
