Kenneth Griffith (born Kenneth Reginald Griffiths on 12 October 1921) was a Welsh actor, documentary filmmaker and television presenter whose career spanned more than six decades. He was raised by his paternal grandparents in Tenby after his parents separated, and their strict Wesleyan Methodist upbringing taught him to question authority, a trait that would define his later work. After excelling at Greenhill Grammar School he dropped the “s” from his surname on the advice of his headmaster, becoming Kenneth Griffith. He made his professional stage debut in 1937 at the Cambridge Festival Theatre and quickly became a repertory actor, appearing in the West End by 1938. During World II he was conscripted into the Royal Air Force but was invalided out in 1942 after contracting scarlet fever, after which he turned to stamp collecting. His first film role came in Love on the Dole (1941) and he subsequently appeared in over eighty films, including memorable performances as Jack Phillips in A Night to Remember (1958) and the “mad old man” in Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994). Griffith’s collaborations with the Boulting brothers, such as Private’s Progress (1956) and I’m All Right Jack (1959), cemented his reputation as a versatile character actor. On television he made striking appearances in The Prisoner and later in series like Minder and Lovejoy. In the 1960s Griffith turned his outspoken sensibilities to documentary filmmaking, producing a series of controversial BBC and ITV works that tackled subjects from the Boer War to Irish revolutionary Michael Collins. His 1973 film on Collins was banned by the Independent Broadcasting Authority and only aired in 1993, exemplifying the political pressure he often faced. Other notable documentaries include A Touch of Churchill, a Touch of Hitler (1971) and Heart of Darkness (1992), which highlighted his willingness to explore contentious historical figures. He was expelled from Iran while filming a documentary on the Three Wise Men and later criticised censorship by the anti‑censorship group Index. Griffith received a Cymru lifetime achievement award from BAFTA in 1994 and left a legacy preserved in the Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, where his papers and memorabilia are archived. He died in London on 25 June 2006, his coffin draped with the flags of Wales, Israel and Ireland, reflecting the complex allegiances that shaped his remarkable career.
