Olwen Williams [Gwynneth Vaughan] is a miner’s daughter from a South Wales mining town where the mine has recently been nationalised, and she longs to move beyond her modest upbringing to a fuller, more rewarding life. A bright opportunity appears when she wins a singing scholarship to a music college in Cardiff, a chance that prompts her to leave her homeland and the boy she loves. The news stings Tom Thomas [Emrys Jones], a local miner who is deeply in love with her, even as he cheers her on and secretly hopes for a future together.

While Olwen is away, an industrial psychologist from London named Alfred Collins [Anthony Pendrell] offers her a new path, and she accepts. She breaks the news to Tom at the difficult moment of her father’s funeral, which follows a mining accident. Olwen then relocates to London with Alfred, but the glamorous invitation of city life soon loses its luster, leaving her feeling disillusioned and distant from the life she dreamed of back home.

Back in Wales, Tom suffers injuries in the same mining world that shaped his dreams and ends up at Talygarn, a convalescent home. There, he is cared for by Glynis [Dilys Jones], a physiotherapist and a friend of Olwen. The two grow close, and a tender love story unfolds between them. Tom’s professional fortunes also rise as he works his way up to a manager level, a development that brings him momentary happiness and a renewed sense of purpose. Yet his ambitions are tempered by the longing to share his life with Olwen, whom he visits in London in a bid to persuade her to return to Wales.

Tragically, Tom’s life is cut short by a mining-related condition, leaving Olwen to reckon with the costs of a life divided by distance and choice. The film closes on a note of resilience and memory, with Olwen offering a heartfelt musical moment that ties her journey back to the homes she left behind.
