In early 1914, as WWI erupts, Louise Jarraud loses her husband at the front and her newborn son dies. Grief drives her to devote her life to other children; she works as a nurse for several families, caring for boys and girls alike. Though a widower and another suitor propose, she refuses, determined to live solely for the children she cares for.
