In 1930, at the height of the Great Depression, the Hardcastle family lives in Hankey Park, Salford. Mr. Hardcastle, [George Carney], is a coalminer; his son Harry, [Geoffrey Hibbert], is an apprentice at a local engineering firm, and Sally, [Deborah Kerr], works at a cotton mill. The family’s precarious world is defined by small wins and bigger worries as the economic squeeze tightens around them.
Mr. Hardcastle’s mine is cut to a three-day week, deepening the strain on everyone at home. Harry strikes a rare note of luck when he wins £22 on a winning thruppence treble bet, and the Bookmaker Sam Grundy, [Frank Cellier], pays up without any trouble, offering a brief respite from daily hardship. At his father’s suggestion, Harry takes his girlfriend Helen, [Joyce Howard], to the seaside resort of Blackpool for a holiday, a small escape from the grinding routine of work and worry.
Yet the relief is short-lived. Harry’s apprenticeship ends, and he becomes unemployed, a blow that reverberates through the whole family. The situation is exacerbated by cuts to means-tested unemployment benefits, the dole, while Helen’s unexpected pregnancy adds new tensions to the already fragile household. Sally, who has been carrying the weight of keeping the family afloat, finds herself drawn toward Larry Meath, [Clifford Evans], a factory worker and Labour Party activist. Their romance complicates Sally’s loyalties and raises questions about the future they might build together, especially as Larry loses his job and the likely prospect of marriage becomes precarious.
The pressures of unemployment intensify, culminating in a dangerous moment when Larry is fatally injured while trying to restore calm during an unemployment march. The tragedy rocks Sally and the entire family, underscoring the human cost of economic despair. In the face of desperation, Sally makes a difficult choice: she reluctantly becomes Grundy’s mistress to help sustain her unemployed family and provide some measure of stability in a world where security feels increasingly out of reach.
