In not-so-merry-old-England during the 13th Century, the neurotic Prince John sits on the throne, backed by his brutal right-hand man Sir Guy de Gisbourne and constantly ridiculed by his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine. When a birthday celebration reveals that his older brother, King Richard, is not dead but being held for ransom in Austria, the young prince faces a crisis that could threaten his rule. Richard’s return to the throne would restore England’s legitimacy, leaving John to contend with a dethronement that could redefine the country’s future.
