James Maitland Stewart (May 20, 1908 – July 2, 1997) was an American actor and military aviator, best known for his distinctive drawl and down-to-earth persona. Over a career spanning four decades, Stewart's film career covered an array of genres, including Westerns and family-oriented comedies. His film roles are considered some of the most significant in cinema history. Stewart was also known for his collaborations with director Alfred Hitchcock, with their work including 'Rope (1948)', 'Rear Window (1954)', 'The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)', and 'Vertigo (1958)'. In addition, he held a distinguished military career, rising to the rank of brigadier general in the United States Air Force Reserve. Stewart's contribution to the film industry resulted in him being considered one of the greatest actors in history. His awards included an Academy Honorary Award, a Golden Globe Lifetime Achievement Award, and two Academy Awards for Best Actor.
