In his own words, the film follows gunsmith David Marshall Williams after he is sentenced to a prison farm, where he is assigned to the workshop. While there he applies his mechanical talent to create a prototype that becomes the precursor to the M‑1 Carbine, the automatic rifle later widely employed by U.S. forces in World War II.
