Fernando Fernán Gómez (born Fernando Fernández Gómez on 28 August 1921 in Lima, Peru) was a towering figure of Spanish‑language cinema and theatre, whose career spanned more than six decades and encompassed acting, directing, screenwriting, novel‑writing, and play‑writing. He moved to Spain with his mother, actress Carola Fernán‑Gómez, in 1924 and adopted her surname as his stage name, quickly becoming one of the most beloved and respected entertainers in the country. Fernán Gómez made his film debut in 1943 with Cristina Guzmán and went on to appear in over two hundred films, ranging from comedic classics such as Anchor Button (1948) to profound dramas like The Spirit of the Beehive (1973) and All About My Mother (1999). His collaborations with directors such as Carlos Saura, Víctor Erice, Pedro Almodóvar and José Luis Cuerda highlighted his unrivalled versatility, allowing him to embody everything from a mournful intellectual father to a sardonic aristocrat. As a director he created cult classics like El extraño viaje (1964) and Life Goes On (1965), films that challenged Francoist censorship and earned him a reputation as a “cursed” filmmaker before later being recognized as masterpieces of Spanish cinema. Fernán Gómez was honoured with two Silver Bears for Best Actor at the Berlin International Film Festival, six Goya Awards, the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, the National Theatre Award, and numerous medals of merit, reflecting his impact on both screen and stage. In addition to his cinematic work, he wrote the celebrated play Las bicicletas son para el verano (1977), which earned the Lope de Vega Prize and was later adapted for film. He was elected to Seat B of the Real Academia Española in 2000, cementing his status as an intellectual as well as an artist. His personal life included marriages to singer‑actress María Dolores Pradera (with whom he had two children) and, later, actress Emma Cohen. Fernando Fernán Gómez died in Madrid on 21 November 2007, leaving a legacy that contemporary filmmakers such as Pedro Almodóvar describe as the living history of Spanish cinema, an extraordinary talent who could make the difficult seem effortless.
