The Anchorite 1976

Fernando Tobajas, a middle-aged man of comfortable means, makes a radical choice: he will live in a bathroom he has converted into a small, self-contained apartment and never step outside its door. He renounces nearly everything beyond his vanity, relying on visits from friends and a peculiar way of reaching the world — the messages he packs into aspirin tubes and drops down the toilet, hoping someone will find them and understand that he exists.

One day, a striking woman named Arabel Lee discovers one of those messages. Her curiosity leads her to seek him out, and she decides to play at being the Queen of Sheba as a playful tribute to him. In time, their unusual bond deepens, and the two begin to fall for each other in a relationship that defies convention and expectation.

Enter Mr. Boswell, a mature English millionaire who adores Arabel and cannot bear the thought of losing her. He engineers a plan to separate the lovers by removing the comforts and services that kept the two apart inside the bathroom, hoping to force them into a different kind of reality. His scheme succeeds in placing them together without the usual aids of life outside the tiny refuge, and the couple confronts a stark truth: their romance may not endure once the boundary of the bathroom is crossed.

As the truth unfolds, it becomes clear that Fernando, once outside the bathroom, would come across as vulgar and dull to Arabel, and she realizes that her deeper love is for the anchored life she imagines within the walls, not for the ordinary man she would meet on the street. The tension reaches a breaking point when Arabel insists that leaving the sanctuary would make love impossible, because what she loves is the essence of the anchorite himself.

In a final, heartrending turn, Fernando tries to persuade Arabel to return to England with him, clinging to the life they shared inside that claustrophobic refuge. But the romance cannot survive the truth they have uncovered. Struggling between desire and despair, Fernando makes a drastic choice: he returns to the window and ends his life by leaping from it into the patio below, a dramatic and somber end to a relationship born of confinement and illusion.
