Luis Ciges

Luis Ciges Martínez (10 May 1921 – 11 December 2002) was a prolific Spanish character actor whose career spanned more than four decades, appearing in over 140 films from the late 1950s until his death. Born in Madrid, he entered the film industry at a time when Spanish cinema was undergoing significant transformation, and he quickly became known for his versatile comedic timing and an uncanny ability to embody eccentric, often grotesque supporting roles. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s he worked with iconic directors such as Luis García Berlanga, Carlos Saura, and the legendary Orson Welles, contributing memorable turns in classics like The Lovely Lola (1962), The Exquisite Cadaver (1969) and the Welles‑produced Chimes at Midnight (1965). His collaborations with the horror‑genre visionary Paul Naschy yielded cult favorites including Horror Rises from the Tomb (1973) and The Vampires Night Orgy (1973), where his performances added a distinctive blend of menace and dark humor that endeared him to genre fans worldwide.

Beyond genre work, Ciges was a staple in the socially satirical films of the Nueva Comedia Española, delivering unforgettable characters in La vaquilla (1985) and La colmena (1982). His ability to shift seamlessly between dramatic and comic moments made him a sought‑after talent for both television series and stage productions, where he appeared in popular programs like Farmacia de guardia and Médico de familia.
