On the matriarch’s 100th birthday, a Spanish extended family gathers at their ancestral country estate. Ana, played by Geraldine Chaplin, is married to Antonio, played by Norman Briski, and she once served as a nanny at the estate. She watches the reunion with a quiet, patient gaze, acutely aware that the house’s familiar rhythms have shifted since her own days of service.
Behind the courteous veneer, bitter realities simmer: José, José María Prada died three years earlier; Juan, José Vivó has parted from his wife, Luchi. Only Fernando, Fernando Fernán Gómez remains close to his elderly mother, Mamá, Rafaela Aparicio. The young girls Ana once cared for have grown up, their childhood years receding into memory, replaced by present tensions and fragile loyalties.
Ana begins to see how the family has fractured into isolated fragments. Luchi has misappropriated funds from the already frail matriarch, a sign of the moral and financial rot running through the clan. When Juan returns for the celebration, the underlying rifts widen: together with Fernando and Luchi, Juan plots to do away with the matriarch in order to seize the inheritance. The atmosphere grows heavier as old resentments surface and the estate’s quiet corridors seem to close in around them.
Amid this mounting crisis, Ana, the onlooker and former governess, finds herself drawn deeper into the family’s fate. Her own marriage to Antonio becomes entangled with the affair brewing within the family, as Antonio embarks on a dalliance with Natalia, Amparo Muñoz. The celebration that began with music and shared memories edges toward mourning, and Ana discovers that she is no longer an observer but a witness to the unraveling of a household that once stood as a symbol of lineage and pride.
