Errol Leslie Thomson Flynn (20 June 1909 – 14 October 1959) was an Australian-American actor famous for his romantic swashbuckler roles during Hollywood's Golden Age. Known for his partnerships with actress Olivia de Havilland, he was recognized for his dashing and womanising personal life. Notable roles include Robin Hood in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), named by the American Film Institute as the 18th-greatest hero in American film history, the lead role in Captain Blood (1935), Major Geoffrey Vickers in The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936), and a number of Westerns such as Dodge City (1939), Santa Fe Trail and Virginia City (both 1940), and San Antonio (1945).

Flynn was born on 20 June 1909 at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Battery Point, Tasmania. He received early education in Hobart, and after being dismissed from different schools, he attended South West London College, a private boarding school. Flynn's initial breakthrough came from starring in a film about the mutiny on the Bounty, In the Wake of the Bounty (1933), leading him to pursue a career in acting. He later managed to secure a job with the Northampton Repertory Company at the town's Royal Theatre, where he worked and received his training as a professional actor. Flynn was dismissed for reportedly throwing a female stage manager down a stairwell, but he later returned to the stage and made a significant impression in Hollywood.
