As the moon casts its silvery glow over the Irish countryside in 1685, the life of esteemed physician Peter Blood (character A) takes a dramatic turn. Summoned to treat his dear friend Lord Gildoy's battle wounds sustained during a rebellion against England's King James II, Blood finds himself entangled in a web of deceit and betrayal when the King's men burst into the room, arresting everyone present as traitors. The ensuing trial is a sham, with the accused swiftly sentenced to death by hanging. However, fate intervenes, and the sentence is commuted to slavery, with the prisoners being sold to wealthy landowners in Port Royal, Jamaica.

Blood's haughty demeanor offends Colonel Bishop (character B), the town's leading citizen, but it piques the interest of his spirited niece, Arabella (character C). She bids for Blood himself, purchasing him from his new master. Despite being subjected to brutal treatment, Arabella intervenes once more, securing Blood a position with less arduous labor.

As Blood plots an escape, Port Royal is suddenly beset by Spanish pirates, and the prisoners seize the opportunity to flee in the chaos. Colonel Bishop discovers their escape and vows vengeance against Blood. Faced with no alternative, Blood and his companions turn to piracy, roaming the Caribbean seas.

During a visit to the notorious pirate haven of Tortuga, Blood reluctantly forms an alliance with the cunning French buccaneer, Levasseur (character D). Levasseur's treachery is soon revealed when he captures Lord Willoughby (character E), an emissary of the King, and Arabella, who has been visiting in England, holding them for ransom. Blood purchases Arabella from Levasseur for a paltry sum of pearls, saving her from certain capture.

Levasseur's frustration boils over as he demands satisfaction through combat and is ultimately defeated by Blood in a duel. Misunderstanding the circumstances, Arabella shuns Blood, stinging him with her disdain. Consumed by regret, Blood decides to return Arabella to Port Royal, knowing that this decision will seal his fate.

As they approach the harbor, the sound of cannons fills the air, signaling an epic battle between English and French forces. Lord Willoughby reveals to Blood that England and France are at war, and the monarch has been ousted, replaced by King William, who has dispatched Willoughby to pardon Blood and his men, offering them a commission in the Royal Navy.

With one voice, the pirates vote to fight against their former foes, emerging victorious from the battle. Colonel Bishop is stripped of his office, and Blood is appointed governor, while Arabella agrees to become his wife, her heart finally at peace.
