The Isle of Devon is a remote, windswept settlement founded in the seventeenth century by Protestant refugees, a place where law and faith sit beneath a towering statue of Simeon. Jonathan Standing, Kerwin Mathews, is the son of the community’s leader, Jason Standing, Andrew Keir, and the great-grandson of its founder. When Jason catches him with a married woman, Jonathan is seized and dragged away as a formal crime against the community is declared: adultery. The woman, pursued by panic and the river’s pull, tries to swim to safety, but she is claimed by the piranhas, leaving a stark, brutal lesson in the hall that doubles as a church and a court under Simeon’s watchful gaze.
In the penal hall, Jason sentences Jonathan to fifteen years of hard labor, a punishment that echoes through the island’s stones. At the nearby penal colony, an overseer singles Jonathan out for especially harsh treatment, and yet the young man somehow manages to escape the cruelty that men like him endure in such places. His flight is interrupted when a band of pirates, led by the notorious Captain LaRoche, Oliver Reed, unexpectedly claims him for their purposes. LaRoche has learned whispers of hidden treasure among the settlers and insists that Jonathan guide him to it, promising to restore justice in exchange for secrecy and cooperation.
The pirates push inland to a farm on the settlement’s edge, a place cared for by the Blackthorne family. Tom Blackthorne, Desmond Llewelyn, makes a desperate stand to defend his wife and daughter, but he is fatally knifed in the confrontation, leaving the family shaken and vulnerable. The island’s stalwart defender, Jason Standing, learns too late that Laroche has spun a tale he wants to believe—yet the truth is far different, and the pirates wrench control from the frightened settlers with brutal efficiency.
As word of the invasion spreads, Jason orders the children to be gathered in the hall while the men take positions along the walls. Laroche presses Jonathan to surrender, signaling that mercy will be given to no one for as long as the island remains silent about the supposed treasure. Beneath the parapet, Jonathan pleads with his father, but Jason’s stubborn pride presses him to the statue’s cold judgment. The pirates breach the hall and begin dragging away women and children as hostages, while the islanders falter in their resolve.
With the settlement under threat, Laroche proclaims a “discovery” and commands his crew to remove the statue, hoping the rock beneath will reveal gold. When their labor yields nothing but wood and dust, he orders the ship’s mate, Hench, Peter Arne, to massacre the remaining captives. Jonathan, sensing a shifting wind, learns the true secret: the statue itself is gilded and painted, not a treasure chest. The group realizes the real bounty lies in what the statue once symbolized, not in gold.
The pirates hoist the statue onto a wagon and march toward the river, intending to haul it to their ship. Henry, Glenn Corbett, one of Jonathan’s friends, and other islanders stage a bold ambush as renegades, while the handful of locals who dare to resist join the fray. The wagon moves slowly, weighed down by fear and stubbornness, until a forest-bound trap slows the pirates’ advance and reduces their numbers. The mutiny grows as Hench warns that their path back is blocked, and Laroche stubbornly insists they press onward toward the river, where their fragile plan might still work.
A dramatic river crossing follows, with the statue still tethered to the raft. Islanders creep closer as gunfire erupts, and Jason fights the pirates in a desperate bid to protect what remains of his people. Henry is wounded but manages to kill Hench; Jonathan engages Laroche in a climactic duel, finally thrusting his rival through. As the raft drifts, a swarm of piranhas surges toward the starving survivors and devours the lot, including Jason. In the end, Jonathan helps Henry away from the doomed craft, and the statue sinks beneath the water, its false gleam extinguished at last.
The islanders’ defiance collapses under the weight of betrayal and nature’s sudden violence, but it is a story of courage tested to its core. Ending with a quiet, haunting denouement, the island’s legacy fades into the sea, leaving only memories of a desperate fight for truth, family, and freedom.
