Pirates of the 20th Century 1980

The film opens with a convoy of military vehicles rolling into a seaport somewhere in the Middle East, near the Soviet cargo ship Nezhin. An agent from a local pharmaceutical company meets the ship’s captain and discusses the opium cargo, a commodity in urgent demand for Soviet hospitals. Soon after, the agent is seen inside a car, speaking to someone over a walkie-talkie. With the cargo secured, the MV Nezhin sets sail for Vladivostok, carrying a tense mix of commerce and risk.

Some distance into the voyage, a watchman cries “man overboard,” and the captain orders the engines stopped to rescue the swimmer. The boat from the Nezhin picks up an Asian man who introduces himself as Salekh, the only surviving sailor from a foreign merchant ship. Salekh, Talgat Nigmatulin explains that his vessel capsized during a violent storm, leaving his crewmates scrambling for lifeboats. As this rescue unfolds, the crew remain unaware that a drifting ship nearby—the Mercury—holds a deadly trap. With a sense of unease, the Nezhin’s captain considers offering aid, while Salekh’s presence foreshadows darker currents beneath the surface of this mission.

The abandoned Mercury draws closer, its deck quiet and empty, yet something feels wrong. The Nezhin decides to dispatch four men to investigate and assist any possible survivors. No one on the Mercury notices the danger as Salekh seizes a weapon from the ship’s firefighting kit and bursts into the Nezhin’s radio room, slaying the radio operator and destroying the ship’s communications. The Mercury’s engines awaken, and it begins to close the gap, while the Nezhin’s crew realizes the ship is under pirate attack. Their attempt to flee is thwarted when the Mercury rams the Nezhin, and armed pirates pour onto the deck, slaughtering the crew who resist.

In the chaos, Sergey Sergeevich, the chief-mate known to the crew as “Grandfather,” discovers the dead operator and makes a desperate bid to confront Salekh. But Salekh’s martial prowess overwhelms him, and the pirate crew quickly gains the upper hand. The raiders offload the opium to the Mercury, and the pirate captain thanks Salekh for a mission accomplished, then orders him to ensure the Nezhin’s destruction. With the ship rapidly deteriorating, the surviving Russians scramble to escape, being forced to abandon the burning vessel as it sinks beneath the waves.

The remnants of the Nezhin’s crew manage to reach a lifeboat and drift toward a nearby island, where pirates have established control over a small fishing village. Among the villagers’ ranks, they encounter the fisherman’s daughter, and together they devise a plan to strike back. Under cover of night, the group boards the pirates’ boat, staging a bold assault that allows them to retake the stolen vessel. In the captain’s cabin they uncover a stash of cash, a small victory that bolsters their resolve, even as danger lurks in every corner.

A tense reunion with the pirates soon follows: the group learns the pirates possess both a crucial piece to the radio and have kidnapped two of the crew as hostages. Negotiations follow, and a grim trade is arranged—the crew will surrender the ship in exchange for their hostages and a speedboat. But the pirates sabotage the engine, dooming the planned escape. Undeterred, Sergey Sergeevich infiltrates the pirates’ ship and forces the radio operator to transmit a distress signal with the crew’s coordinates. He then moves to the engine room and puts the engines in full reverse, steering the Nezhin’s former oppressors toward disaster by crashing the ship into rocks and killing all aboard.

With the pirates eliminated, the surviving crew return to the repaired speedboat and push onward into the open sea. The fisherman’s daughter stands on the island’s cliffs and waves farewell as they disappear into the horizon, leaving behind a tale of piracy thwarted and resilience tested against overwhelming odds.
