The film opens with a tongue‑in‑cheek dedication thanking figures such as Adolf Hitler, David Niven, Joseph Stalin, Faye Dunaway, Tojo, Mickey Rooney, Jack Carter, Alan Alda, John Frankenheimer and the millions of Nazis, Japanese and Americans who made it possible. Marooned sailors then stumble upon a World War II vessel whose late captain still haunts its decks, blending dark humor with wartime intrigue.

Towards the end of World War II, four United States Navy sailors—the accountant Lieutenant Krim, Alan Alda; the cook Oglethorpe, Mickey Rooney; the gunner’s mate Toole, Jack Carter; and the Cheyenne seaman Lightfoot, Manu Tupou—are separated from their ship and marooned on a Philippine island. They come across the wreck of a gunboat, HMS Curmudgeon, and a British Royal Navy officer, Commander Finchhaven, David Niven, who entices them to take action against nearby Japanese positions. Finchhaven’s plan is driven by a desire to redeem distant family pride and his own scarred record from the First World War. The quartet agrees to assist, and their path toward action hinges on rebuilding a ship from salvaged pieces with the unexpected help of Jennifer Winslow, a garage owner whose presence becomes crucial to their survival. Faye Dunaway brings Jennifer Winslow to life in the story, lending warmth and practicality to a mission born of desperation.
As the crew works to restore the vessel and prepare for battle, Finchhaven reveals a haunting truth: he is a ghost condemned to sail the seas forever after an escape-tinged downfall—drinking before his first battle in the Great War. Yet fate seems oddly kind in this moment, because his luck first appears to turn. He manages to sink an Imperial Japanese Navy cruiser—an act that occurs after the cruiser had already officially surrendered to the United States Navy. The moral complexity of this deed, tangled with fate and blame, weighs heavily on the men left behind on shore and on Finchhaven himself.
The victory, however, does not grant real rest. Instead, it seals Finchhaven’s fate in a far more surreal form: he is seen again, wandering the afterlife of his own making, roaming the waters of a children’s amusement park lake. There, he awaits another war and another chance at redemption, a perpetual loop that blurs the line between heroism and haunting consequence. The story threads together themes of duty, honor, and the elusive nature of victory, painting a portrait of sailors who face both external peril and internal reckonings as they navigate a world where battles echo long after the guns have fallen silent.
