She is courted by the seasoned actor-producer Charles King, yet her heart hesitates, unsure whether a union with a man so closely tied to the theatre world is right for her. The tension between desire and doubt is set against the chaos of war when an air raid during the Blitz shatters a café where Carole sits. A bomb blasts through the room, and she is knocked unconscious. In the ensuing fog of concussion, her mind drifts into fantasy, and she becomes Nell Gwyn of Old Drury, while the man she associates with power and glamour—Charles King—appears as a regal, imposing King Charles.
