Around the turn of the twentieth century in England, the family's alcoholic Uncle Willie is a constant source of trouble, while his brother‑in‑law serves as the household spokesman. To win the favor of American heiress Virginia van Stuyden—who is in love with Frank—the family arranges for Uncle Willie to purchase a bicycle shop, a scheme that delights his eager nephew Charles. Tensions rise when the stuffy Lord Sir George Probus, at whose manor Virginia is staying, is scandalised by her decision to attend a local carnival.
