Spoilers ahead

Telling her fiancé Tom Mitchell that she must spend a week with her sick grandmother, Janet instead goes to the flat of Mr. Hoffman, a recently divorced executive she hardly knows from the firm. His claim is blunt and coercive: he says he has evidence that could send Tom to jail, and he has used that threat to force Janet into spending the week with him. Despite his outward desire for Janet, Hoffman remains deeply bitter about women, and he bullies her with psychological pressure rather than physical force. Janet, young and inexperienced, discovers a reserve she did not know she possessed; she begins to push back, testing the limits of his control and even resorting to provocative behavior when he fails to respond.
