Dianne Foster (born Olga Helen Laruska on 31 October 1928 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) was a Canadian actress and model of Ukrainian descent whose career spanned the golden age of Hollywood and early television. She began performing at the astonishing age of thirteen in a stage production of James Barrie's What Every Woman Knows, and by fourteen she had launched a successful radio career that soon made her one of Canada’s top radio talents, working with CBC drama supervisor Andrew Allan on acclaimed programs such as Stage ’49. After a stint modeling for Walter Thornton and teaching at his school, Foster moved to London in 1951 where she appeared on stage in Agatha Christie’s The Hollow and Orson Welles’s Othello, before returning to North America to honor a five‑year film contract. Her Hollywood breakthrough came in 1954 when Columbia Pictures signed her, leading to memorable screen pairings with stars like Mickey Rooney in Drive a Crooked Road, Glenn Ford in The Violent Men, and Burt Lancaster in The Kentuckian. Throughout the late 1950s she remained in demand, co‑starring with Alan Ladd in The Deep Six, appearing alongside Spencer Tracy in the BAFTA‑nominated The Last Hurrah, and sharing the screen with James Stewart in Night Passage. By the early 1960s Foster transitioned to television, guest‑starring on legendary series such as Bonanza, Wagon Train, The Fugitive, and Perry Mason, often portraying strong, nuanced women. After her final film appearance in 1963’s Who’s Been Sleeping in My Bed? she gradually withdrew from the public eye, focusing on family life with three children.
