Gus DeMarco, an electrician, seizes a shot at a childhood dream: buying an old bowling alley with a group of friends. But the bank refuses the down payment because he still pays alimony to his ex-wife, Leonora. In a bid to end the alimony, he hatches a plan to speed up a remarriage for her, trying to match her with a string of potential husbands.

With his girlfriend, Rita, by his side, he comes across as a likeable blue-collar worker driving a classic convertible, full of optimism. Leonora, who is in college, seems to prefer intellectuals, complicating the plan. She has several would-be suitors; one pushy candidate upsets her and she goes to Gus to complain, then invites him to dinner. As the evening unfolds, her professor boyfriend, Tom Gough, arrives, stirring trouble since he is married and only using her.

Meanwhile, Rita breaks up with him on the day they plan to move in together, feeling that he is still in love with his ex. A coworker explains what being in love is like, which inspires him to seek Leonora again, but a sight at the botanical garden—seeing her with Dominic—stops him from confessing his ongoing feelings.

During a job, Gus is badly shocked by electricity while saving a coworker. Leonora, seeing him in the hospital, realizes she still has feelings for him, and Rita is by his side as he sleeps. After discharge, Leonora visits his apartment. She has broken up with Tom, and Dominic has asked her to marry him. The emotional tension lingers as the future remains uncertain.

Gus sells his cherished car to fund the bowling alley venture with his friends, deciding to go ahead with the business despite the alimony. In the end, Gus and Leonora discover that they still love each other and choose to reunite.
