John Cleves, Jason Robards, is a successful businessman with an office in New York and a home in New Jersey. On Wednesdays, he spends the night in the city, telling his wife, Dorothy Rosemary Murphy, that he is away on business when the truth is he is meeting Ellen, his mistress, Jane Fonda. The arrangement sits at the edge of secrecy, blending practical desire with a growing tension at the edges of his marriage.

A business client from Akron, Cass Henderson, Dean Jones, arrives in town and cannot find a hotel room for the night. Cleves’ new secretary, Miss Linsley Ann Prentiss, knows of an “executive suite” the boss keeps in town and arranges for Cass to stay there for the evening. There, Cass encounters Ellen and, in a moment of muddled perception, mistakes her for the kind of woman Cleves keeps on retainer to entertain clients.

The secretary’s misstep amplifies the mix-up by informing Dorothy about the apartment. Dorothy goes to the suite, discovers Ellen and Cass, and misreads the situation as a young couple whose dynamic hints at something more than a simple business meeting. The two women, however, quickly find themselves drawn to each other, and the spark between them leads Dorothy to invite Ellen to join her and John for an evening out on the town.

As the truth about John’s Wednesday routine begins to surface, Dorothy’s feelings shift from bewilderment to resolve, and she ultimately decides to leave him. Ellen, sensing an opportunity for fairness and connection, invites Dorothy to use the apartment, extending a tentative bridge between the two women. John, eager to repair the breach or perhaps simply to reclaim what he desires, goes to the apartment to win back his wife’s affections, but Dorothy’s answer is clear: she tells him to come visit her on any Wednesday, a line that marks a turning point in their fragile, complicated relationship.
