Kay Bentley, Joan Crawford, is a bored socialite who sails to Greece on her wealthy father’s yacht, a setting where luxury and ease shape her days. On shore, she meets an idealistic archaeologist, Terry O’Neill, Brian Aherne, a man whose passion for discovery challenges the beliefs she has never questioned. Their budding romance quickly unsettles Kay, and she even pretends to be Ann Morrison, secretary to the man who is actually her father, Frank Morgan, a ruse that reveals how far she’s willing to go to protect her glamorous life.

When Kay returns to New York, Terry travels there to resume the affair, only to be met with Kay’s cool rejection. The sting of that dismissal sparks a harsh confrontation, and Terry publicly learns Kay’s true identity, an episode that leaves him angry and hurt. Yet his hard words also tug at Kay’s conscience, and she finds herself drawn back to him. She attends the Professor, Etienne Girardot, in his lecture hall, hoping to see him again and perhaps understand the pull of the world he represents, a world that Denise—no, that Kay’s own life often pretends not to acknowledge—could be missing.

Back in the orbit of high society, Kay and Terry clash repeatedly over class, status, and the choices that come with privilege. Their debates are sharp, witty, and revealing, underscoring a growing tension between Kay’s desire to belong and Terry’s commitment to a life of purpose beyond luxury. The pair’s back-and-forth becomes a lens on Kay’s values and the price of maintaining a sheltered life among elitist friends who measure worth by wealth and appearances.

A turning point arrives when Kay learns that her father has lost his fortune, and she shifts her alliance toward a more secure future by planning to marry her original, wealthier fiancé. Yet fortune’s reversal doesn’t last long in this story—the father manages to recover, and Kay reconsiders her stance. In a move that reopens the door to love over luxury, she agrees to marry Terry. The father obliges by hiring Terry as an executive, a position that should stabilize the couple’s life, but it proves stifling for Terry. He feels boxed in by office walls and longed-for freedom to return to his archaeology in Greece.

Terry’s yearning for the open road and the thrill of discovery sits in quiet opposition to Kay’s carefully curated existence in New York. The tension between the life she’s known and the life he offers forces each of them to decide what truly matters. Will Kay surrender the comforts she’s always relied on, or will she stay within the familiar orbit of privilege to preserve her status? As the story unfolds, Kay experiences a shift in perspective, realizing that happiness for her may lie in choosing to be with Terry wherever his passion leads him, even if that means leaving behind the life she once believed she needed. In the end, the romance withstands the pull of wealth and reputation, and Kay’s choice aligns with the ideal she once doubted, a commitment to love and a future that transcends social boundaries.
