What's After the Movie
Granville Bates (January 7, 1882 – July 8, 1940) was an American character actor whose career spanned more than two decades and encompassed over ninety films, many of which have become classic examples of early Hollywood cinema. Born in Chicago, Illinois to developer Granville Bates Sr. and Adaline Gleason, he grew up in the Lakeview neighborhood where his father later replaced the family townhouse with a commercial building, an early lesson in the transformative nature of the city’s architecture. Bates entered the burgeoning film industry in the 1910s with Essanay Studios, a Chicago‑based company that helped launch the careers of many silent‑film pioneers, and his World War I draft registration listed him as a travelling actor for Francis Owen & Co., indicating a vigorous touring schedule even during wartime. After the silent era, he transitioned to the stage, appearing on Broadway in the late 1920s and early 1930s; notable productions included the original Merrily We Roll Along (1934) by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart and the original Twentieth Century (1932), where he performed as the Conductor. From the 1930s onward, Bates became a familiar face in Hollywood, often cast in authoritative or gruff supporting roles that showcased his talent for nuanced comic timing. Critics praised his performance as the irascible Judge Bryson in My Favorite Wife (1940), with Bosley Crowther of The New York Times calling it “a masterpiece of comic creation,” and his portrayal of a cynical banker in Men Against the Sky (1940) earned similar commendation. Despite often being uncredited, his presence added depth to films such as Chatterbox (1936) and Of Mice and Men (1939). On July 8, 1940, Bates suffered a fatal heart attack in Hollywood; he was buried at Graceland Cemetery in his native Chicago, leaving behind a legacy of versatile character work that continues to be appreciated by film historians.
