Detective husband‑and‑wife Joel and Garda Sloan, who also run a rare‑book shop in New York, vacation in Seaside City. Joel’s friend Mike Stevens is organizing a beauty pageant, and Joel serves as a judge after investing $5,000, to Garda’s irritation. Promoter Eric Bartell arrives to swindle Stevens, but when mobster Ed Connors appears, Bartell is murdered. Joel and Garda investigate the killing.
